Mara Enkaji sits in Siana Conservancy on the eastern side of the Mara ecosystem. Conservancy land means lower vehicle density than the main reserve and the freedom to do things the reserve does not permit — night drives, walking, off-road positioning for photography.

What we like about this property is that it is honest about its own room ladder. Most lodges blur the difference between their cheapest and best rooms until you arrive. Enkaji states plainly that the standard room has no private deck, no outdoor shower, no bathtub and no valley view. That lets us price you a real choice instead of a surprise.

What makes this one different

The kitchen genuinely handles vegetarian and Jain food

Guests repeatedly single out the Indian vegetarian cooking — idli, dosa, poha made properly rather than as an afterthought. If you have travelled in East Africa on a vegetarian or Jain diet you will know how rare that is, and how much it shapes a trip. Tell us in advance and it is arranged before you arrive.

The rooms

Four categories, with a real difference between them — not marketing tiers on identical rooms.

  • Double Deluxe Cottage — king bed, indoor rock-style bathroom, outdoor rain shower, large wooden soaking tub, private deck with hammock and swing
  • Twin Deluxe Cottage — two queen beds, otherwise as above
  • Deluxe Family Cottage — two bedrooms (one double, one twin), shared living room, two indoor bathrooms, outdoor rain shower, large deck
  • Standard Double — one double bed, indoor rain shower only. No deck, no outdoor shower, no tub, no valley view. The value option, and they say so
  • All rooms: tea and coffee station, safe, hairdryer, bathrobes, Wi-Fi and mobile reception

Things to do without leaving the property

  • Bush spa — massage, sauna, guided meditation
  • Yoga sessions
  • Swimming pool
  • Bush breakfasts, sundowners and candlelit bush dinners
  • Private in-room dining
  • Maasai village visits and cultural performances
  • Guided nature walks
  • Hot-air balloon flights (arranged locally)

When to come

Siana is productive year-round. Migration herds spill into the eastern conservancies roughly July to October, but resident predators are the draw the rest of the time.

Green season, March to May, is the cheapest and the prettiest. Accept some afternoon rain in exchange for empty roads and better light.

Getting there

  • By air — the lodge arranges airstrip transfers.
  • By road — a full day's drive from Nairobi via Narok to the eastern Mara.
